We suggest that when you contact any breeder that you be prepared to ask questions of the breeder and also be prepared to answer questions from the breeder. Only seek breeders that do the required OFA testing for the Boykin Spaniel Breed. The OFA is a good source. Responsible Breeders work hard to breed out problems. 1. Eye Examination by a boarded ACVO Ophthalmologist with results with OFA.
2. Patellar Luxation - OFA Evaluation
3. Hip Dysplasia - OFA or OVC or PennHip Evaluation
4. Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC) - DNA test through approved lab.
5. Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) - DNA test through approved lab. 

6. Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) - DNA test through approved lab.

There have been some more recent concerns for additional DNA testing for Intervertebral Disc Disease/Chondrodystrophy (IVDD/CDDY) and Chondrodysplasia (CDPA). Paw Print Genetics presented a very informative seminar to the BSCBAA on August 20, 2020 and your can click here to view the slide presentation. In light of this new information, we are encouraging Boykin Spaniel owners and breeders to have this DNA test administered and hopefully with enough information can proceed with research. 

Look for Breeders who do an in-depth testing and does additional genetic panel testing for all their breeding Sires and Dams. It's important to have the knowledge of dominant and recessive genes. Do your research and ask questions. A reputable breeder who goes above and beyond will be grateful for your questions. Expect to pay more for a reputable breeder.
